Manufacturing robots have become increasingly important in the era of Industry 4.0. As the industrial landscape undergoes a digital transformation, these robots are offering various types and applications of automation that cater to different manufacturing needs in the assembly line. 

The history of robots in manufacturing can be traced back to the early 1960s, when the first one, the Unimate, was installed at a General Motors plant in 1961. It marked the beginning of a new era, paving the way for more sophisticated and versatile iterations. Over the years, innovations and improvements in technology have led to the development of more advanced versions, and Mitsubishi Electric has been at the forefront in the industry since the introduction of the Melfa product line, the company’s first dedicated development in the area of human-robot cooperation.

The Melfa lineup feature articulated arms with multiple joints, or axes of rotation, which allow them to move in a highly flexible manner and cover an extensive range of fields. In addition, Mitsubishi developed a CPU optimized for CNC control, the M800/M80 series, to boost processing performance in high-precision machining.

The CPU wasn't the only dedicated feature developed for the project; even the display control was specifically designed to match the specifications: a custom 19” vertical touchscreen display unit with two-split multiple windows that won the Machine Design Award 2016 and the Good Design Award in 2015.

Throughout this years, Mitsubishi Electric continued to expand their coverage with new innovations and new automation systems but, as is often the case with successfully business, their software wasn’t keeping the pace of their growth. Notomia was invited to improve the interface to accomodate new features and introduce an easier-to-use 3D work simulation, as the current experience was purely focused on the engineer point of view.

Through interviews, workshops, and strategy sessions with the teams at Mitsubishi Electric, we had the opportunity to identify the core user needs and product requirements that would drive design and technology ideation. The platform would have to meet the practical needs of engineers, technicians, and product managers, while also meeting the standards of manufacturing process in a modern factory. The team developed product architecture and experience concepts informed by both functional and aesthetic criteria, continuously evolving according to ongoing explorations of the system’s UI and data visualizations.  We evolved from a technical interface solely centered on numbers and tables, to a contemporary contextual ecosystem, where the value of their interconnected infrastructure is elevated.

Users can now effortlessly explore a 3D model at their preferred scale and orientation, interact with the model, examine individual parts or the assembled whole, and make real-time specification changes. Contextualized information is intelligently displayed only when relevant.
